About

At fifteen, Josef Cordova left his home town in the Sierra Gold Country of California to attend college in Florida. Having little money in college, Josef started out selling class art projects to friends for enough money (usually thirty or forty dollars) to purchase supplies for his next projects. This led him to focus his attention primarily on portraiture which he found he could sell quite easily to his friends. As his love for portraiture grew, so did his appreciation for the work of Russian-American impressionist, Nicolai Fechin, and Richard Schmidt, master of the live study. With the help of these artists and others, and with his own deep love for “pushing around paint on a canvas,” Josef has become an astonishingly accomplished painter, garnering quite a bit of local acclaim as well as the attention of The Artist’s Magazine.

When asked about the philosophy behind his art, Josef explains that he does not separate his artistic philosophies from his personal convictions as a Christian. “The best soil from which art can grow,” Josef says, “is a deep love and respect for others and an awe inspired gratefulness for this wonderful world that we’ve been given.” Because of this world view, Josef has used his particular talent for impressionistic representationalism to bring others face to face with the profound beauty of the world we live in and the people with whom we share it.
